Tsukuba Science City located in Tsukuba city, Ibaraki, is one of Japan's most distinguished science cities. About 13000 researchers in approximately 300 research institutes and companies such as University of Tsukuba, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, National Institute of Environmental Studies, etc., are leading Japan's science technology. Moreover, it has Mount Tsukuba, which is one of Japan's famous 100 mountains, and its land is enriched in nature with vast rural districts and fields. In August 2005, the Tsukuba Express train line was opened allowing travel between Tsukuba and Tokyo (Akihabara) in only 45 minutes. Further development of the city is expected.
Tsukuba Center is the key point of transportation of Tsukuba city, with many commercial facilities such as department stores and shopping malls and public facilities such as Nova Hall and Tsukuba Capio. Tsukuba International Congress Center, which is the venue for the opening ceremony and Jury meeting of the 20th International Biology Olympiad, is also located in Tsukuba Center.
It is the core of Tsukuba Science City. It is Japan's largest university with an area of 258ha. 16000 students (undergraduates and graduates) and 2000 teaching staff are registered. In 2007, nine diverse schools/colleges, e.g. School of Health and Physical Education, were established. The theoretical and practical exams of the 20th International Biology Olympiad will take place in University of Tsukuba College of Biological Sciences.
The maximum temperature of Tsukuba city in mid-July when the 20th International Biology Olympiad will be held is estimated to be 25~30 degrees Celsius. Also, because this time of year is the period of the end of the rainy season, both temperature and humidity is predicted to get quite high. Conference rooms and accommodations will be air-conditioned, but please bring rainwear for going out.
Participants and leader observers will stay in different accommodations.
Ibaraki prefecture is a "treasure house of food", with Japan's prominent fertile land and rich marine products.

Voltage: 100V
Frequency: 50Hz*
*Eastern Japan : 50 Hz (including Tsukuba, Narita, Nikko, Tokyo)
Western Japan : 60Hz (Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Hiroshima))
Plug: A
A convertible type of electrical appliance such as a hair dryer, travel iron and shaver will therefore be handy; otherwise a transformer is required to convert the voltage. There are no columnar-shaped plugs or 3-pin plugs used in Japan but 2-flat-pin plugs are used instead. It is therefore advised to purchase a plug adapter beforehand
